Use this private seller checklist in Ireland before you commit:
- confirm the seller matches the VRC
- check NCT due date and validity
- compare mileage with records
- run a history check
- ask about crashes, finance and repairs
- keep payment and ownership transfer controlled
Why private buyers need this
Private sales can be excellent value, but only when the buyer stays methodical.
Check the VRC first
The Vehicle Registration Certificate should match the car and seller. If the name is different, ask for a clear explanation. Do not assume it is fine because the seller sounds confident.
Ask the uncomfortable questions
Ask:
- Is the mileage correct?
- Is there outstanding finance?
- Has the car been crashed?
- Are there known faults?
- Why are you selling?
The CCPC specifically advises buyers to ask about crashes, repairs, finance and mileage.
Viewing checklist
When you meet the seller, check:
- the car starts cleanly
- warning lights behave normally
- tyres are safe
- lights work
- interior wear matches mileage
- service documents are available
- VRC details make sense
The viewing is where the seller’s claims meet the evidence.
Handover checklist
Before leaving with the car, confirm the final price, record payment and receipt, complete ownership transfer, collect keys and documents, and confirm what is included.
