Since 31 March 2025, drivers taking out or renewing motor insurance in Ireland must provide a driver number. The requirement also applies to named drivers on the policy. It is an identity and licence check, so a registration number, policy number or learner-permit application reference is not a substitute.

On an Irish photocard driving licence, look at field 4(d). On a paper licence, the number is shown in field 5. The Central Bank says that without the required driver number, an insurer cannot issue or renew the policy. Collect the number from every named driver before completing an online quote; entering the policyholder’s number for everyone can leave the application incomplete or inaccurate.

If a named driver holds a non-Irish licence, ask the insurer what verification it accepts. CCPC guidance says a physical copy of a non-Irish licence may be required. Do not assume that an old quote or a previous insurer’s records will satisfy a new provider’s check.

The easiest time to catch a mismatch is before renewal. Check the number against the document itself, and make sure the name and date of birth on the application match the licence. If the licence has been renewed or replaced, use the current document’s number and ask the insurer before changing details mid-policy.

This requirement is separate from the car’s registration, motor tax and NCT status. Keep those checks distinct when buying a used car. For the rest of the renewal paperwork, see Car Insurance Renewal Checklist Ireland.
