EV Battery Warranty Transfer Ireland

An Irish guide to EV battery warranty transfer, using Kia and Toyota examples and explaining imports, service history and VIN checks.

A used EV advert that says “battery warranty until 2030” is useful only if the warranty actually follows the car, the mileage limit has not been exceeded and the vehicle remains eligible under the manufacturer’s terms. Transfer rules vary, especially for imports.

The right answer is therefore not “EV battery warranties transfer.” Some do, under conditions. Verify the exact brand, original market and VIN.

Kia Gives a Clear Transfer Example

Kia Ireland states that its seven-year/150,000 km warranty is transferable to later owners if the car is maintained as required. Its EV and PHEV high-voltage batteries are included in the seven-year coverage, with a published 70% capacity guarantee for EV/PHEV batteries under the warranty terms.

That makes remaining Kia warranty a real used-car asset, but the clock starts at first registration, not when you buy it second-hand.

Toyota Shows Why Import Origin Matters

Toyota Ireland says its standard European-market manufacturer warranty can transfer between owners. It also states that a vehicle originally sourced outside the Pan-European market would not have the same manufacturer warranty cover in Ireland.

This is crucial for Japanese imports. A recently imported Toyota EV or hybrid may look young but not carry the Irish/European warranty a buyer assumes.

Time and Mileage Both Matter

Most battery warranties end when either the time limit or mileage limit is reached. A five-year-old high-mileage EV can exhaust mileage coverage before the calendar term ends.

Ask for the first-registration date and current odometer reading, then calculate remaining headroom.

Defect Warranty and Capacity Warranty Are Different

Some manufacturers warrant manufacturing defects for a set term but separately define battery-capacity degradation. Skoda, for example, publishes an eight-year/160,000 km BEV degradation warranty with a 70% threshold, while PHEV degradation is treated differently.

Do not read “battery warranty” as one single promise.

Service and Use Conditions Can Affect Claims

Warranty terms may require correct maintenance, approved repair procedures and proper vehicle use. Kia’s Irish terms explain that missing service does not automatically void every claim, but a fault attributable to incorrect maintenance can be declined.

Keep invoices and check campaign/recall completion.

How to Verify Before Buying

  1. Get the VIN and first-registration date.
  2. Ask an authorised retailer for warranty status.
  3. Confirm original market.
  4. Separate defect coverage from capacity/degradation coverage.
  5. Check mileage limit.
  6. Ask whether warranty work has already been performed.
  7. Keep the dealer’s written confirmation with the purchase file.

Bottom Line

Remaining battery warranty can materially improve a used EV’s value, but only when it is verified. Kia offers a clear example of transferable cover, while Toyota’s guidance shows why import origin can change the answer completely.

Do not pay extra for a warranty line in an advert until a retailer confirms it against the VIN.
