EV grants Ireland 2026 is one of the highest-intent searches for Irish car buyers because the answer affects the real price of the car. It is also a search where old information can be expensive. Grant values, price thresholds and scheme status can change, so the safest approach is to treat every grant as something to verify before ordering.

Start your search with live stock on electric cars for sale in Ireland, then compare the real grant position before you commit. If you are still deciding between EV, hybrid and petrol, keep cars for sale in Ireland open as a broader comparison.

What This Checklist Covers

This page is for buyers who want the practical version:

  • new private electric car purchase grants
  • home charger grant support
  • VRT relief on electric vehicles
  • electric van grant support
  • used EV grant limits
  • scrappage scheme reality
  • the checks to make before paying a deposit

It is not a replacement for official guidance. It is a buyer-friendly map of what to check and in what order.

New Electric Car Grant

SEAI lists a maximum grant of €3,500 for qualifying new private M1 battery electric passenger cars, subject to eligibility rules and vehicle-price limits. The grant is normally handled through the dealer, which means the invoice and dealer process matter.

Do not assume every new EV qualifies. The exact model, price, registration category and timing can affect the answer. If the car is close to a price threshold, ask the dealer to show the pre-grant full price and how the support is applied.

Used EVs Are Different

Used electric cars can still be excellent buys, but SEAI states that purchase grants are not available for used EVs. That does not make a used EV a bad deal. It means the value case must come from price, range, battery confidence, motor tax, charging access and running costs rather than a new-car purchase grant.

Home Charger Grant

SEAI lists an EV home charger grant of up to €300. The charger must fit the scheme rules, and installation should be handled by a Safe Electric Registered Electrical Contractor. The charger matters because home charging is often the difference between easy EV ownership and constant planning.

Before buying the car, confirm:

  • off-street parking
  • charger location
  • distance to fuse board
  • MPRN details
  • landlord or management-company permission if relevant
  • whether the property has already received a grant

Read SEAI Home Charger Grant Ireland Guide before choosing an installer.

VRT Relief

Revenue guidance says qualifying series production electric passenger cars and commercial vehicles registered before 31 December 2026 can receive VRT relief up to a maximum amount, with thresholds based on Open Market Selling Price. This is separate from the SEAI purchase grant.

For imported EVs, VRT can decide whether the import makes sense. Read EV VRT Relief Ireland 2026 Guide and Importing Electric Car to Ireland VRT Guide.

Electric Van Grants

SEAI also lists grants for qualifying new N1 electric vans, with different grant values for small vans and large panel vans. This is especially relevant for trades, delivery businesses and companies trying to reduce diesel exposure.

Scrappage Scheme Reality

SEAI’s ICE2EV pilot scrappage page says the scheme has reached its target and is closed to new applications. That is still useful information for buyers because older articles and dealer conversations may mention scrappage support without making the current status clear.

Always check the scheme page on the day you plan to act. Do not build a budget around a closed or uncertain grant.

Bottom Line

The best EV grant strategy is simple: choose the car, verify grant eligibility, price the charger, check VRT context and then compare the total ownership cost against used EV, hybrid and petrol alternatives.

The grant helps only when the car already fits your life.

Final Pre-Deposit Check

Before paying a deposit, ask the dealer or seller to put the key assumptions in writing. For a new EV, that means grant amount, full price, delivery timing, registration timing and whether the car is definitely eligible. For a used EV, it means accepting that the new-car purchase grant is not the reason to buy.

Also compare against at least three alternatives. One should be another new EV, one should be a used EV and one should be a hybrid or petrol car. This stops the grant from becoming the whole story. A grant can make a weak purchase look exciting, but it cannot fix poor charging access, weak range, expensive insurance or a car that is too large for your needs.
