Pricing a used car advert in Ireland is not about choosing the number you would like to receive. It is about choosing a number that survives comparison. Buyers do not view your car in isolation. They compare it against similar adverts, finance offers, dealer stock, private sellers and the cost of immediate work.
The best asking price is high enough to leave room for a fair negotiation, but low enough that a serious buyer still sends a message.
Build A Comparable Set
Start by collecting 8 to 12 comparable cars. Use cars for sale in Ireland and other live listings, but be strict. A comparable car should match your car in the areas that change buyer value.
Compare:
- make and model
- year
- mileage
- fuel type
- transmission
- trim
- NCT length
- ownership history
- service evidence
- seller type
- location
Do not compare your 170,000 km private-sale car with a dealer car at 95,000 km and a fresh NCT. That is not pricing research. That is wishful anchoring.
Separate Asking Price From Sale Price
The advertised price is not always the final price. A seller may ask €12,500 and accept €11,800. A dealer may advertise higher because the price includes preparation, legal obligations, warranty confidence, overhead and finance handling.
Private sellers need to understand this gap. If you price too close to dealer retail, buyers will ask why they should take private-sale risk at dealer money.
Read Private Sale Value vs Dealer Trade-In Value Ireland for the difference between those price layers.
Adjust For NCT
NCT is one of the biggest Irish pricing levers. A car with a long NCT is easier to buy. A short NCT adds risk.
Use the official tools:
If your car has only a few weeks left, either test it before sale or price it as a car with uncertainty. Buyers will do that calculation anyway.
Adjust For Mileage Honestly
Mileage affects price, but not in a straight line. A low-mileage car with poor service history may not deserve a premium. A higher-mileage car with a clean history can still be strong.
The price should reflect whether the mileage is supported by condition. Seat wear, tyres, service records, brake condition and dashboard warnings all influence trust.

Adjust For Immediate Spend
Buyers think in total cost. If your car needs tyres, brakes, service, timing belt, NCT work or body repair, the market will discount it.
A useful method is to list the next 12 months of likely costs. If a comparable car has fresh tyres and yours needs four tyres soon, your car is not truly comparable at the same price.
Use The Three-Price Method
Set three numbers before publishing:
- Ideal price: the number you would be happy to get.
- Fair sale price: the number that still makes sense after normal negotiation.
- Walk-away price: the number below which selling is not worth it.
Do not invent these numbers from emotion. Build them from comparable stock and condition.
Watch Early Signals
The first seven to ten days usually tell you whether the price is realistic. If the advert gets views but no messages, trust or price is weak. If it gets messages but no viewings, the advert may be unclear. If buyers view and leave, the car or documents may not match the advert.
Do not keep the same price for weeks while hoping the market changes. The stale advert becomes part of the story.
Market Context
Carzone’s 2026 motoring report says Irish drivers change cars every 5.2 years and that 55% of car owners have used car finance. This matters because many buyers are not only asking “can I afford the price?” They are asking “does this car fit my monthly cost and risk?”
SIMI’s June 2026 update also reported used imports up strongly year to date. More imported supply can affect pricing pressure in popular segments, especially where UK or Japanese stock gives buyers alternatives.

Bottom Line
A good used car advert price in Ireland is not the highest number visible online. It is the number that makes your car look credible beside similar stock.
Price from evidence, leave sensible negotiation room and react quickly when the market gives feedback.
