The Northern Ireland motorcycle practical test is not one continuous ride. DVA splits it into a manoeuvres test and an on-road riding test, and a candidate must pass the required theory and training steps for their category first. The current nidirect test guide describes the format and should be checked again when you book.

What the manoeuvres stage tests

The manoeuvres stage tests control at low speed and under braking: slow riding, a slalom, a figure of eight, walking and riding U-turns, an avoidance exercise and an emergency stop. DVA lists the centres that offer the manoeuvres element as Ballymena, Craigavon, Downpatrick, Londonderry (Newbuildings), Mallusk and Omagh. Check the booking service for current availability; the nearest on-road centre may not provide every part of the test.

How the on-road ride is assessed

For the road test, expect an eyesight check, motorcycle safety questions and a ride directed by the examiner using a radio. Nidirect says the road portion takes about 40 minutes. The examiner assesses observation, positioning, speed choice and control in real traffic, not just the ability to follow directions. Practise the manoeuvres until they are repeatable, then spend training time on junction decisions and safe independent riding rather than rehearsing a single route.

Prepare a compliant test bike and learner record

Your test bike must meet the minimum requirements for the category. The machine used for the manoeuvres and road tests must be the same type, roadworthy, insured and correctly displayed with L-plates; an automatic or semi-automatic test can restrict the resulting licence entitlement. Review the official DVA minimum test-vehicle requirements before test day.

New GDL requirements began in October 2026, including a Programme of Training and logbook. Check the official learner route for how those steps apply to your motorcycle category.
