Why buyers should check before travelling
An NCT close to expiry affects value. It does not automatically make the car bad, but it changes the negotiation. A car with a short NCT should be priced with that timing in mind unless there is a clear reason.
What to do if the result surprises you
If the official check does not match the advert:
- ask the seller to explain
- check the registration was entered correctly
- avoid paying a deposit until it is clear
The official result should carry more weight than a casual description in a listing.
What the result means for price
NCT timing affects value because it changes the buyer’s immediate risk. A long NCT gives more confidence, especially on an older car. A short NCT is not automatically a deal-breaker, but it should make you ask why the seller is not testing the car before sale.
If a car is advertised as “will pass NCT no problem”, treat that as an opinion until it has passed. Price the car as it stands today, not as it might be after repairs.
When to check NCT during a purchase
Check before messaging, before travelling and again before payment if there has been a delay. Registration mistakes, expired bookings and optimistic advert wording are common enough that the extra minute is worth it.

Buyer rule
Treat the NCT check as a filter, not a full inspection. A valid NCT says the car met the test standard at the relevant time. It does not prove the car has perfect service history, no crash damage, no finance issue or no upcoming repair bill.
The best use is comparison. If two similar cars are priced closely but one has a longer verified NCT, clearer service history and cleaner seller answers, that car is usually easier to justify.
For sellers, checking early also prevents avoidable disputes. If the advert states the exact verified NCT position, buyers have less room for confusion during negotiation.
