After a failed vehicle test in Northern Ireland, two dates matter: when you apply for a retest and when the retest itself takes place. They are not the same deadline. According to nidirect’s DVA guidance, an application for a retest must be made within 21 days of the original test. If that window passes, a full test fee is required. The retest must then be completed within 60 days of the original test.

Apply promptly and choose the retest route

Book as soon as the repairer can give you a realistic completion date. Leaving the booking until the last week creates avoidable pressure, especially if parts are delayed or a second defect appears. Use the official DVA online booking service and choose the retest option only when the vehicle is eligible; do not assume that a normal appointment will preserve the retest fee or deadline.

Make sure the vehicle is safe for the appointment

Before attending, check that the work addresses every item on the refusal notice and that the vehicle is roadworthy to travel. A retest appointment is not permission to drive an unsafe vehicle. Keep the original test paperwork, repair invoice and booking confirmation accessible. If the car cannot safely reach the test centre, ask DVA how to proceed and arrange suitable transport rather than taking a chance on the road.

Agree repair responsibility before buying

If you are buying a vehicle that has failed, ask who will pay for the repair and whether the seller will complete the retest before handover. Put the agreement in writing, including what happens if the retest fails again. The companion guide on reading a DVA refusal notice explains how to assess the defects themselves.
