A heavy trailer has its own roadworthiness and identification requirements in Northern Ireland. Nidirect says a trailer with maximum mass above 3,500kg needs an annual test, with the first test due within the relevant one-year period linked to manufacture or first public-road use. Because the earlier date and the trailer’s exact status can matter, confirm the due date with DVA rather than estimating from the purchase invoice.

Locate the trailer’s identification before booking

Before booking, locate the trailer’s registration or identification details. The DVA booking service asks for the trailer’s C or NI number and the last four digits of the chassis number. Do not leave an identification issue until test day: nidirect warns that a trailer presented for an annual test without the required UK ID number or a securely attached chassis plate can fail.

Check type approval and previous records

The official trailer guidance distinguishes trailers under UK type approval from older trailers. It says trailers made before 29 October 2012 continue to receive an NI identification number at their first annual test, while newer heavy trailers may need the applicable type-approval documentation. If buying an older or imported trailer, ask for the chassis plate, manufacturer details, previous certificates and evidence of its use date. A seller’s statement that “it has always passed” is not a substitute for traceable identification.

Inspect the full towing combination

Inspect coupling, parking brake, service brake connections, tyres, lights, reflectors, chassis and load restraint before use. A trailer can be structurally sound and still be unsafe because its brakes or coupling do not suit the towing vehicle. Confirm the combination’s weight and driving-licence entitlement separately; see nidirect’s car and trailer licence guidance.
