For most already-registered private cars, the online motor-tax renewal is a short transaction once the correct PIN is available. The official service asks for the vehicle registration number, PIN, an email address and a credit or debit card with billing details. Check that the registration matches the car you intend to tax; a similar-looking character can send you down the wrong path.

The PIN is normally included in the renewal notice sent during the month the current tax expires. If that notice is missing, check your email’s spam folder and use the PIN retrieval option on Motor Tax Online. For a previously taxed second-hand vehicle, the service says the PIN can also be the last six digits of the Vehicle Registration Certificate number. New and imported vehicles may use a different reference, so follow the instructions for that transaction.

Before paying, check the vehicle details and the tax period shown. If the car is off the road, do not assume that simply leaving it unused cancels tax obligations; use the official declaration process and confirm its effective dates. If the card payment fails authentication, Motor Tax Online says the bank may need to approve the transaction through its app or another strong-authentication step.

Save the payment confirmation and check the updated tax status afterwards. Online availability varies by vehicle class: the service supports private cars, while some commercial-vehicle transactions are renewal-only and first-time applications may require a motor-tax office. Use the official service’s vehicle-type notes before assuming every case can be completed online.
