Northern Ireland uses Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) for learner moped and motorcycle riders. It is not the same name or administration as the Republic of Ireland’s IBT, so a rider moving between jurisdictions should not assume that a course, certificate or learner condition transfers automatically. Check with DVA and the training provider before booking or buying a bike.

What CBT permits in each motorcycle category

The nidirect CBT guidance says a learner needs a provisional licence in the relevant category and a valid CBT certificate before riding on public roads. For AM mopeds and A1 light motorcycles, a learner with the appropriate valid certificate can ride unaccompanied, subject to learner conditions. For A2 medium and A large motorcycles, CBT alone does not allow unaccompanied road riding: the learner must be accompanied by an Approved Motorcycle Instructor until passing both the manoeuvres and on-road tests.

Confirm the trainer and the learner route

Not every training business can issue an NI CBT certificate. Nidirect says only instructors on the statutory Northern Ireland register are authorised to provide the course. Ask the school to confirm its registered status, what category and transmission the course covers, what identification to bring and what happens if you need more practice before the certificate can be issued.

Under the GDL rules introduced in October 2026, motorcycle learners also have a Programme of Training and logbook to complete; the six-month minimum learning period applies to Category B cars, not Category A motorcycles. Check the GDL learner guidance for the latest requirements and exceptions.

Choose a motorcycle that fits your entitlement

Before buying a learner bike, match its category, power and transmission to your licence and training plan. An attractive advert is no help if the machine is outside your entitlement or unsuitable for the test route. The DVA motorcycle practical test guide covers the next step.
